Comprehension Exercise 2

An Influential Person in My Life
Iftarun Nahar (ENG 045 06378)

Sometimes, we meet people, in our life, who can change our life around. It can be our family, or teachers, or our friends. Each person who I have met in my life has taught me at least something, but a significant amount of what I have learnt, has come from my younger brother, Rakibul Hasan Rakib. Our age difference is not more than 4years and though he is younger than me, I have learnt a lot of things from him throughout my life. I, in the past, was just his opposite. I saw and treated him just like a monster before understanding what greatness was hidden inside him. He was an introvert but affable with me. Being my younger brother, his every word had a huge significance in my life. He had got a fantastic sense of humor. Moreover, he was a little bit mature; sometimes he acted like my parents. He taught me everything like my parents did. It really made me proud when I thought how much intelligent he was even though he was younger than me. He was always a good achiever in his study but I was not. He never let me down. He encouraged me in studying and supported me while I was scoring less. Because I was absolutely stupid, I did not know how much energy he had when he tried to explain me each reason of my failing. Comparatively, I was so immature and emotional, sometimes I became astonished to think who was elder, he or I! He still stands by me until I can control myself and apologize to him. He taught me the word ‘tolerance’. Tolerance is something that I must learn and keep it in mind forever. When my mom was upset, and talked to me, I always reacted even after she explained the reason of being upset. But Rakib never uttered a word. He listened to mom with lots of love and patience, and at the end of the conversation, mom felt so relieved. I still try to be patient like him. He also taught me how anything done with passion is always fun and will lead to success. His love is so effective towards the people that when he loves someone, he always makes sure that he is there for them. In my choice of friends, he also played a role. He advised me, “If you find that persons are not worth being friend, you do not make them your enemy, rather you just do not make friends with those people.” His words gave me a big lesson in my life to make friendship with anyone. He also suggested me not to be so extrovert or so friendly with all the people before knowing them well. He taught me how to keep a good connection with others without any trouble. He still teaches me that, no words can punish people, only silence can and I have myself experienced that with him. When he scolded me or fought with me, I fought back, but when he ignored me, I felt miserable and became angrier on him. As we grew up, my brother acted careless, but I always knew he looked out for me and was there!
I cherish my brother greatly, because he has taught me many things about life. All of these I have come to realize that I have used. He guides me on the right way to make sure that I always get the better things in my life. He is my best friend, my soul mate, my inspiration, my mental twin, my strength. I still look up to him for his guidance, protection and advice as if he is my elder brother. I feel very lucky to be his sister, his friend. My childhood days were magical because of him. I love him more than anything else in the world. When I think about him, I feel happy, inspired, and energetic, and also feel a little sad because now I am far from him. I miss him very badly at times.
Lastly, I want to agree with Terri Guillemets, a quotation anthologist, who has said – “After a girl is grown, her little brothers - now her protectors - seem like big brothers.”
